Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias

The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is the largest sequoia grove in Yosemite National Park, home to over 500 mature giant sequoia trees! Protected since 1864, President Lincoln signed legislation protecting Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley. Our country was in turmoil. However, the federal government nationally protected Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove during the Civil War to benefit future generations. You can take a free shuttle from the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza to the grove when you visit. Many hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, from easy to moderate to strenuous. The sequoia trees are unfathomably tall and may be the most significant living things on earth. Many believe that the oldest giant sequoia in Yosemite might be over 3,000 years old! Some of the most famous sights within the Mariposa Grove include the Fallen Monarch, a toppled tree with beautiful exposed roots, and the Grizzly Giant, estimated to be over 2,700 years old. 

Lower Yosemite Fall Trail

Few natural sights are more breathtaking than a waterfall, and Lower Yosemite Falls is part of North America’s tallest waterfall. Amazingly, Lower Yosemite Falls is the final 320-foot drop of the enormous waterfall! It peaks in the spring and early summer, and the sound of the water is deafening. While standing on the footbridge near the base, expect to get wet! The walk to the waterfall is relatively short and easy and well worth it when rewarded with the spectacular views of both the Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls. The paved loop trail also has a variety of exhibits so that you can learn more about the cultural and natural history of the area. Leashed pets and strollers are allowed on the trail, too, so the whole family can take in the incredible sight of Lower Yosemite Fall. 

Crane Flat Area

Crane Flat is a pleasant forest and meadow near the Tuolumne and Merced Groves of Giant Sequoias. Both sequoia groves are accessible only by foot, but well worth the walk when you get to the enormous, iconic trees. What makes Crane Flat Area the most unique is its best seasonal feature – the Crane Flat Snow Play Area! Sledding hills are created among the trees when there is plenty of snow on the ground. Open meadows become the perfect space for building snowmen or exciting snowball fights! Portable restrooms are brought in for the winter months, making them more family-friendly and accessible. While Yosemite is beautiful year-round, Crane Flat Area is the most fun in the snowier months. You’ll be sure to make lots of winter memories with your family!
