If you’re looking for a fun outing as a family, then you can’t go wrong with visiting a zoo! The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka has been entertaining and educating kids since 1907, making it the oldest zoo in California. Located near the famous California redwoods in Sequoia Park, this zoo inspires families to practice nature conservation by instilling wonder, respect, and a passion for wildlife. 

Exhibits feature many different animals worldwide, including pandas, bears, coyotes, birds, donkeys, rabbits, alpacas, pigs, and more. Above all, the exhibits are engaging and interactive fun for all Eureka kids and families! The Redwood Skywalk is a self-guided experience where families can see the forest from the trees! This one-of-a-kind experience is located within the Sequoia Park Zoo.

Redwood Discovery Museum

The Redwood Discovery Museum is where families can have positive, memorable experiences that foster young minds and spark their natural curiosity about the world. A full range of Early Childhood Development professionals, parents, and educators run this museum. Its history spans almost three decades. This museum is an interactive, stimulating learning environment for Humboldt County’s families. 

The exhibits at the Redwood Discovery Museum promote hands-on learning through interactive, open-ended experiences in academic areas such as science, art, culture, technology, and healthy living. This Eureka museum also hosts several classes and events, including Kids’ Night at the Museum, Young Discoverers, and Pal Camp. Current hours can be found on their website.

Fort Humboldt State Historic Park

This military fort was established in 1853. Originally it sat on a bluff overlooking Humboldt Bay and was home to one of the most famous military figures in history, Captain Ulysses S. Grant. What was once the fort’s hospital building is now a museum depicting the history of Fort Humboldt and the Native Americans who lived there. Other features of this space also include a historic herb and vegetable garden and a logging museum. 

Morning and evening fog is common, and temperatures are mild, so be sure to dress appropriately.
