How Printing Your Photographs Can Improve Your Child’s Self Esteem

Newborn

Making your little ones feel loved, special, and important is one of the most important roles you have as a parent. By showing your littles how much they mean to you, it helps shape how they see themselves and build their self-esteem. One way to ensure your children feel important and have a healthy self-view is something you may already be doing, and, is much simpler than you might think.

Studies Show That Printing Photographs Can Improve Your Child’s Confidence

Having portraits done of your little ones and then printing those photographs and displaying them has actually proven to enhance their confidence. Studies have shown that children’s self-esteem is significantly increased when exposed to self-portraits photographs. A study done in 1975 with a group of children in Tennesse by Tulane University helps to prove this theory. During the study, in a span of 5 weeks, a group of children was tasked to take polaroid photos of themselves in a variety of poses and emotions. They were then asked to put those imaged into a scrapbook throughout the 5 weeks. The results of this study concluded that these children’s self-assessment of their self-worth was boosted by the end of the experiment through frequently viewing portraits of themselves.

Printing Photographs of Children Proves To Them That They Are Valued

The positive results of that experiment are best explained by David Krauss who says, “I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit.” For this reason, Krauss uses personal photography and family photographs as part of his treatment plans for patients while working on their mental health. As a parent, by printing portraits of your children, you let your child know that they are an important part of your family and are highly valued as a member of your household. You show them that you are proud to have them in your family and that they are permanently important to you. When a child sees their smiling, happy self surrounded by people who love them, they are constantly reminded that they are loved and safe.

I Love Helping Children See Where They Belong

Krauss goes on to say, “A photographer’s job is to create and make the image look like a safe holding space for kids where they are safe and protected. Kids get it on a really simple level.” As a photographer, I take this part of my job very seriously. I love that I have the ability to help a child see how much their family loves them and capture a place of safety and love for them to always remember. However, they can’t remember this place of love and safety if they can’t see it, right.

Don’t Let Your Photographs Be Forgotten On Your Hard Drive

Your children are growing up in a digital age, which while it has its pros, also has its cons. Don’t let those memories you capture together be lost to your little ones, somewhere in the digital universe. Make a commitment to print your family portraits and share them with your children. Give your littles the ability to enjoy the most important part of their world and have a constant reminder that they are important to you. This will not only improve your children’s self-esteem, but it will make your home a more beautiful place.
