As you search for the best photo locations in San Francisco, you’re likely picturing sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge or dramatic coastal landscapes.
While those iconic backdrops are beautiful, choosing the right location is about more than finding a scenic view.
I recommend selecting a place where your family can relax, your children can be themselves, and everyone can simply enjoy the experience together.

After photographing families throughout the Bay Area for years, I’ve learned that the right setting looks different for every family.
Whether you’re expecting your first baby, welcoming a newborn, or updating your annual family portraits, the location should support your experience rather than become the focus of it.
Here are some of my favorite photo locations in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area, along with why each one works so well for different types of sessions.
Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands
Although technically just across the Golden Gate Bridge, Rodeo Beach is one of my favorite San Francisco family photo locations.
Its rolling dunes, dramatic coastline, and soft natural colors create a beautiful setting without feeling overly busy or crowded.

It’s one of the best photo locations in San Francisco for families who love a coastal backdrop but prefer a quieter, more relaxed experience.
The landscape photographs beautifully throughout much of the year, making it a wonderful choice for maternity and family sessions.
Filoli Gardens in Woodside
Located in nearby Woodside, Filoli offers a completely different feel from the coast.
Its beautifully maintained gardens, tree-lined pathways, and seasonal blooms create an elegant backdrop that feels timeless in every season.

One of the things I love most about photographing here is how much beauty the garden offers.
From beautiful gardens and architectural details to open lawns, there are so many lovely places to photograph without ever leaving the property.
If you’re looking beyond traditional photo locations in San Francisco, Filoli is well worth the short drive.
It’s one of my favorite San Francisco photo shoot locations for maternity and family sessions.

Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County
If you love expansive landscapes and natural scenery, Mt. Tamalpais is another one of my favorite San Francisco photo locations.
The mountain offers sweeping views, rolling hills, and beautiful golden light that create a peaceful backdrop for maternity and family sessions.

I especially love photographing here because it feels quiet and removed from the busyness of the city, giving you room to slow down and simply enjoy the session.
If wide-open landscapes are more your style than gardens or the beach, Mt. Tamalpais is one of the best photo locations in San Francisco for creating relaxed maternity and family portraits surrounded by nature.
Baker Beach in San Francisco
Baker Beach is one of the most recognizable photo locations San Francisco has to offer, thanks to its beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the city’s iconic coastline.
I occasionally photograph sessions here when clients specifically request it, especially if including the bridge in their portraits is important to them.
That said, I always like families to know what to expect before choosing this location.

The weather can change quickly, fog is common, and the beach is often much busier than many people anticipate, which can make sessions feel a little less relaxed.
For that reason, I often recommend other San Francisco family photo locations, like Rodeo Beach, Filoli, or Mt. Tamalpais, depending on the look and experience you’re hoping for.
They offer many of the same beautiful qualities while providing a quieter setting so you can enjoy your session.
The Best Photo Location Depends on Your Family
There is no single answer when asking for the best photo locations in San Francisco.
For some families, that might mean an outdoor session with wide open scenery where children have room to explore.
For others, it means staying somewhere familiar, cozy, and relaxed while documenting the earliest days with a new baby.

When I’m helping clients choose between different San Francisco photo locations, we always start with what feels most natural for your family.
We’ll consider the season, your children’s ages, the type of session you’re planning, and the overall feeling you’d like your photographs to have.
Often, the location that creates the most meaningful images isn’t the one you initially expected.
Why I Love In-Home Sessions for Newborn & Family Photography
When clients ask me about the best photo locations in San Francisco, my answer often surprises them.
Instead of recommending a scenic overlook or a popular landmark, I usually tell them the very best place to consider is their home.
For newborn sessions especially, home is where everyone feels most comfortable.
There’s no need to pack extra supplies, worry about traffic, or adjust your baby’s schedule around travel.

You can simply settle into the spaces where your family already spends time together.
In-home sessions are also wonderful for families with young children.
Siblings can take breaks, play with their favorite toys, or snuggle with mom and dad whenever they need a little reassurance.
Having a familiar environment helps children feel more comfortable and confident, resulting in family photos that feel more personal and authentic.
One of My Favorite San Francisco Photo Locations
If you prefer a more refined, minimalist aesthetic, choosing my Dublin, CA studio as your San Francisco Bay Area photo location is another wonderful option.
While many people begin their search by looking at outdoor photo locations in the area, a studio session offers something completely different.

Instead of planning around the weather, crowds, or changing light, everything is carefully designed to create a calm, relaxed experience where the focus stays entirely on your family.
The studio is an especially lovely option for maternity and newborn sessions.
One of the biggest advantages of choosing the Dublin studio over the many outdoor San Francisco photo shoot locations is that we never have to worry about changing weather or inconsistent light.

After photographing in my studio, clients always tell me how much they appreciate the simplicity of these sessions.
From access to my carefully curated client wardrobe to personalized styling guidance for the whole family, every detail is planned with your comfort in mind.
The clean, timeless design of the studio also keeps the focus entirely on you and your family.

Without busy backgrounds competing for attention, your photographs feel elegant, classic, and never tied to a particular trend or season.
If you’re looking for one of the best photo locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, the studio is a beautiful choice for creating timeless maternity and newborn portraits.
Choosing the Best Photo Location in San Francisco
Every family photographs differently, and that’s exactly why I never believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
The right setting for your session is the one that complements your family, your season of life, and the experience you want to remember for years to come.

Whether you’re drawn to the comfort of home, the simplicity of the studio, or one of the beautiful San Francisco photo locations surrounding the city, my goal is to help you feel relaxed and cared for every step of the way.

If you’re beginning to explore photo locations in San Francisco for your maternity, newborn, or family session, I’d be honored to help you choose the setting that’s the best fit for your family.
