Family pictures are a great way to capture the memory of your young family, but a great way to live in this joyous moment with your children so young and little is to turn your family portrait session into a full-on family night.
One of my favorite recommendations for my families is to plan an evening around your family pictures to solidify the memory of this time and to strengthen your family bonds. (as a side note — I recommend planning your family activity for after our session so your children aren’t worn out for the pictures.) Stopping for a treat or an activity enhances the evening for both parents and children alike.
As a big fan of dessert myself, my top suggestion is usually to take the entire family out for a treat after we wrap up your session, and I have several recommendations for family-friendly dessert stops, all within the downtown Plymouth, Michigan area!
Bookmark this list for your next family outing or keep these places in mind as you plan the evening of your session with me.
The Cupcake Station — My personal favorite!
One of my favorite places to take my own family is The Cupcake Station. They have delicious cupcake flavors and you can get a dozen mini cupcakes for a really good deal — the perfect solution for sampling when you can’t choose just one flavor for yourself!
Another favorite located in the heart of downtown Plymouth is Kilwins, a boutique chocolates and specialty treats shop. Their original recipe Mackinac Island Fudge is what dreams are made of, but we also love stopping for caramel apples, especially in the fall.
Grand Traverse Pie Company has a few locations throughout Michigan, but they’re conveniently located to most of my favorite session locations, making them a great option for an after-shoot treat. They have incredible pies in all flavors, but if your session is a little earlier and you’re looking for a hearty meal, they have a delicious cafe menu, also.
Dairy King is an ice cream shop with ALL the fixins. You’ll be hard pressed to find a flavor + topping combo you don’t like! This business survived the pandemic by hustling hard and I was so happy to see all the love and support they received that helped them stay in business. They’re taking a quick break but should open again sometime this month making them a great stop for a treat after your summer evening family portrait session.
Another favorite ice cream stop is Dairy-Go-Round, self-proclaimed “delicious ice cream treats with a modern twist”. This Plymouth, Michigan staple is a fan favorite at my house, for sure. They offer seasonal flavors as well as their year-round flavors, so you’ll be needing to make a few stops by throughout the year to catch all the goodness.
Alpine Chocolat Haus is a magical assortment of treats and chocolate goodness. The variety makes it perfect for families so every member can get their favorite dessert all in one place! My favorite treat is their chocolate covered pretzels, but they also have a ghost pepper caramel corn that is their most interesting offering and definitely worth a try!
Talk about specialty ice cream — these guys make the best, most incredible ice cream shakes! Just scroll their Instagram feed to see their super cool creations. I love their hot chocolate, but my latest obsession has been their ice cream sundae donuts — two of my favorite desserts combined!
Last but not least is Boule Artisan Bakery right in downtown Plymouth. They sell dessert bread, cookies, and all other manners of baked goods. When it’s too chilly for ice cream, their delectable cookies and breads make for a wonderful take-home and eat by the fireplace treat.
If you love dessert as much as I do, use your family portrait session in downtown Plymouth, Michigan as an excuse to stop at one of these places after to continue the family memories and start new traditions!
